Adventures in DIY

Last week, we touched briefly on the subject of DIY artists. These artists are becoming increasingly popular today and even rivaling traditional artists. Being a DIY artist presents many advantages, including less production expenses and less cost of manufacturing. This drastically simplifies the process of producing an album, which in turn, allows the artist to pump out more albums. Sites like Bandcamp and Soundcloud have made it possible for artists to practice the freemium experiment. This gives consumers the option to download a song for free or to set the price themselves, which creates more of an incentive to buy, since they would have supported the musician either way.

My good friend Griffin Duran is a DIY artist himself. Between being a full time student at Full Sail University to study Music Production and handling his own record label, Griffin literally does it all. He has invested in all of the software, sound equipment, and instruments necessary and does everything from his homemade studio or laptop. Griffin created the record label, Bonehead Records, of which seven members including me and him are a part. The label’s genre mostly includes Rap & Hip-Hop, Acid Jazz, Neo-Soul, Indie Rock, and Electronic music. He writes all of the lyrics and music for his songs, does all of the instrumentation and recording, and handles the production and mastering process. Before the end of his high school career, he had already produced his own EP and collaborated with countless artists. Not only does he have a hand in production, but he also manages all of the social media for the record label. Bonehead Records can be found on Facebook, Soundcloud, iTunes, and YouTube. Griffin advertises his music with the choice of it being free, consumer’s price, and a set price (depending on the artist).

If anything is holding you back or discouraging you from pursing your goals, hopefully Griffin will be an inspiration for you. Success as a DIY artist is possible in today’s world with perseverance and passion. In conclusion, please, please follow Bonehead Records on social media! We would greatly appreciate the support. I leave you with the video version (with animation done by Griffin) of Tyler, the Creator’s “Treehome95” that I recorded with Griffin and Nikki Gonzalez. Enjoy!
